How Not To Use Social Networking Site Facebook

Some people look at a social networking site like Facebook and see a means of socializing, of connecting with people they know or share their mutual interests. Other people see it as a means of spreading malware, but we will not talk about them. Today I would like to present to you the cases of Emma Brady from Accrington, Lancashire and Anthony Stancl from New Berlin, Wisconsin.

Emma Brady, a 35-year-old conference organizer, used to be married to Neil Brady for the past 6 years; I say “used” because the two are getting a very public timeout (no official divorce proceedings have been filed). It seems that husband Neil could not be bothered to tell his wife face-to-face that he wants a divorce, and opted to simply update his Facebook status to “Neil Brady has ended his marriage to Emma Brady.” The message was eventually conveyed to Mrs. Brady when she got a phone call from a friend in Denmark. When she confronted her husband he first acted as if nothing had happened, then lost his temper, accused her o cheating and threw her out of the house. He admitted his guilt in court and was consequently fined (at least he did not end up in jail).

“This whole thing has been really terrible. All the friends I have on the site are people I have known for years so it's been really humiliating having everything happen so publicly. We were like any other couple. We had our ups and downs but as far as I knew things were fine between us. The irony is if he had just asked me for a divorce I would have agreed because I would never have wanted to make him unhappy,” says Emma Brady.

Speaking of jail, this is exactly where Anthony Stancl will end up after he used Facebook to convince 31 of his classmates from the New Berlin Eisenhower Middle/High School to send him naked pictures of themselves (he passed himself off as a girl in order to do so). Once in possession of these pictures, Stancl used them to blackmail his colleagues, and I am not talking about money – he blackmailed them into performing sexual acts. The authorities have Stancl in custody and have charged him with child enticement (5 counts), second-degree sexual assault of a child (2 counts), third-degree sexual assault (2 counts), possession of child pornography, repeated sexual assault of the same child, and to top things off, making a bomb threat.
