Hottest Girls: First iPhone App for the Adult Audience Is a Go, Sort Of
With the release of the iPhone OS 3.0, Apple introduced a whole list of new features to the device, parental controls being amongst them. Thanks to the Parental Controls feature, Apple could finally drop the “we won’t allow this app in the store because it contains objectionable content” and a deluge of adult-oriented iPhone apps were expected to land. Well, this if precisely what happened with one iPhone app called Hottest Girls.
Hottest Girls is an iPhone app that has been around for some time now, but it never contained nudity. It did contain images of women in skimpy outfits that would get any man all hot and bothered, but the girls never showed us the areas where the sun does not shine. The development team behind the app decided that with the new Parental Controls feature, it is safe to update the Hottest Girls app and give it something that would better suit the tastes of an adult audience: nudity.
With the update, Hottest Girls became the first iPhone app to feature nudity – but it did not last for long. The app was pulled not by Apple, as you would have expected, but by the developer. It seems Hottest Girls, with adult contet, was such a big hit that the developer had to shut down for a while and adjust its server to handle the traffic.
“The Hottest Girls app is temporarily sold out. The server usage is extremely high because of the popularity of this app. Thus, by not distributing the app, we can prevent our servers from crashing. Those who already have the app will still be able to use our app. To answer the question on everyone's mind: Yes, the topless images will still be there when it is sold again,” explained the developer.
While everyone was expecting the app to make a triumphal comeback, Apple came out to announce that it has removed the app. “Apple will not distribute applications that contain inappropriate content, such as pornography. The developer of this application added inappropriate content directly from their server after the application had been approved and distributed, and after the developer had subsequently been asked to remove some offensive content. This was a direct violation of the terms of the iPhone Developer Program. The application is no longer available on the App Store,” an Apple spokesperson Tom Neumayr said.
How does Apple filter apps? The iTunes App Store comes with a 4-tier app rating system: 4+, 9+, 12+, and 17+. When you want to download an app that contains objectionable content, you are served a warning message: “IMPORTANT: This product contains material that may be objectionable to children under 17.” There is even a new rating sub-heading that says the app contains “Frequent/Intense Sexual Content or Nudity.” Too bad Apple isn’t actually using these parental controls.
