For each new membership, The Linux Foundation will donate $25 to the World Wildlife Fun. The money will go towards saving the emperor pengiun.

The Linux Foundation is doing this as part of its Holiday Individual Membership Drive.

There are many reasons why you would want to get an individual membership for The Linux Foundation, like for example considerable discounts when you purchase books and your very own @Linux.com email address. There is another perk that comes with getting an individual membership: you will help save the emperor penguin, the penguin species that served as the inspiration for Tux, the widely known Linux mascot.

Earlier this week The Linux Foundation announced that the Holiday Individual Membership Drive kicked off. And as part of the drive, the foundation wants to help out the Emperor Penguin. For each individual member who joins The Linux Foundation from now until the 10th of December, The Linux Foundation will donate $25 to the World Wildlife Fund – the money will go towards protecting the habitat for the emperor penguin.

“The Linux community is massive and together can accomplish anything. This has been proven time and time again,” said Mike Woster, chief operating officer, The Linux Foundation. “We hope this year’s Holiday Individual Membership Drive can bring to bear the tremendous power of the community to help advance Linux while supporting another important cause this holiday season: the future of the emperor penguin.”

The annual membership fee is $99 for individuals and $25 for students.

Founded back in 2000, The Linux Foundation is a nonprofit organization dedicated to sponsoring the work of Linux creator Linus Torvalds, promoting the Linux open-source operating system, providing neutral collaboration and education, protecting and supporting the Linux development, improving Linux as a technical platform, and managing the Linux.com website so that it is a properly good hub of information for the Linux community and a platform for advocacy for the Linux operating system.
