It doesn’t matter how you call it, be it the Lunar New Year or the Chinese New Year. What matters is that it is today, that it marks the start of The Year of the Monkey, and that two big name companies from the software world have found fun ways to celebrate it.

The two companies I am talking about are Microsoft and Valve. Take a look below to see how these two are celebrating the Lunar or Chinese New Year.

Microsoft introduces the Ninja... Monkey

Seeing that the Ninja Cat was a big success, Microsoft decided to celebrate the Lunar New Year by releasing some cool new images for Windows Insiders, images that feature an amusing Ninja Monkey. View the monkey below, download all the Ninja Monkey images Microsoft released here.

The original Ninja Cat image, which was discovered during the spring of 2015 on Microsoft’s Redmond campus, presented the feline riding a fire breathing unicorn. In the summer of 2015, Microsoft released some new images, featuring the Ninja Cat riding a T-rex and a narwhal.

Play as the Monkey King in Minecraft

Since it is the Year of the Monkey, Microsoft released a new “Journey to the West” skin pack for “Minecraft: Windows 10 Edition Beta” and “Minecraft: Pocket Edition”. The exciting thing about this skin pack is that it features more than a dozen characters from the iconic Chinese folk story, allowing you to play as the Monkey King or as…
  • Princess Iron Fan
  • Lord Hundred-Eyes
  • Bull Demon King
  • Jade Emperor
  • Monk Pig
  • Friar Sand
  • Lady Earth Flow
  • Spider Demon
  • Guanyin
  • Xuanzang
  • Pale Bone Demon
  • Black Wind Demon
  • Scorpion Demon
  • Red Boy
“Embark on your own adventures to uncover long-forgotten dungeons, and work with your disciples to save villages from terrible monsters and gain enlightenment,” said Aubrey Norris, PR at Microsoft Studios. “These skins are a perfect complement to a variety of playstyles – role-players can recreate Chinese folk tales, builders can recreate an imperial city in costume, PVP warriors can set up battles between heroes and demons, and more.”

The “Journey to the West” skin pack is priced at $1.99. If you don’t want to get the whole pack, you can get Red Boy and Guanyin for free.

Minecraft: Windows 10 Edition Beta is available for download on the Windows Store.

Minecraft: Pocket Edition is available on Apple’s App Store, Google Play, Amazon, and the Windows Store.

Valve has a surprise Steam sale

Valve is observing the Lunar New Year with a Steam Sale that ends at 10AM PST on Friday, February 12, 2016.

The cool thing is that the sale is presented as a travel adventure that goes like this: you’re trying to make your way back home to Monkey City and reunite with your family. The road is paved with numerous obstacles and you will have to choose how you want to proceed. Based on your choices, Steam will show you various types of games, like driving games, ninja-themed games, fighting games, and more.
