Several things will inevitably happen on Halloween: malware spreaders will use black hat SEO tactics to try and peddle their malicious applications, FindMySoft will run a Halloween Special and will focus on Halloween-related or just plain frightening news, and you will buy a lot of candy. Some of that candy, you will have to give to trick-or-treaters – unless you want them to egg your house.

And you will eat some of it – who can resist the urge to eat some delicious candy, am I right? The development behind Wolfram Alpha, the computational knowledge engine developed by British-born physicist and Mathematica creator Stephen Wolfram, is aware of the fact that you will eat a lot of candy this Halloween. The team is also aware you probably want to monitor what you eat during the Halloween holidays. So the team put together a Candy Nutrition widget.

“Halloween week is full of spooky tricks and tasty treats. And between the office parties and the loads of edible loot reaped by the little ghosts and goblins, monitoring consumption of all those treats can be both tricky and scary! But have no fear, we built this handy Wolfram|Alpha Widget that lets you check out nutrition information for common Halloween candies,” announced the Wolfram Alpha team.

Widgets, just in case you do not already know this, are mini-apps built on top of Wolfram Alpha queries, apps that can be shared on Facebook, Twitter, or via email. Widgets can also be embedded on blogs or websites. The Candy Nutrition widget presents nutrition facts about various treats, including Snickers, Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups, Twizzlers, Butterfingers, and Hershey’s Milk Chocolate.

It is quite easy to use the widget. Simply enter a value in the “Amount” section, select a type of candy from the dropdown menu, then click “Submit”. Detailed information on the query you submitted will then be presented.
