Hundreds of angry ghosts have invaded the illustrious Magic Cat Academy. It’s up to Momo, a freshman feline, to save the day. By using her wand to draw symbols, Momo can cast out the mischievous spirits, save her friends, and restore the peace at the Magic Cat Academy.

That is, in an nutshell, the story behind Google’s Halloween 2016 doodle, doodle that is featured today on Google.com, on the Google mobile app, and the Chrome web browser. If you’re reading this after October 31, you can access the Halloween 2016 doodle by clicking the link above or by visiting the Doodles Archive.

The doodle that Google created in honor of Halloween 2016 is a fun game that you can play in your browser. The game features Momo, a freshman feline at the illustrious Magic Cat Academy, academy that has been overrun by angry ghosts. It’s up to Momo to save the day by using her wand to draw symbols.

To defeat a ghost, you must draw its symbol. If there’s a | symbol above a ghost, draw a vertical line to destroy it. If there’s a – sign above a ghost, draw a horizontal line to destroy it. Like this.

There are 5 levels in all, set across the library, cafeteria, classroom, gym, and school rooftop. As expected, things get tougher and tougher as you progress through the levels. The ghosts have just one symbol at level 1, meaning it’s incredibly easy to defeat them. But as you progress, they have more and more symbols, making it harder to defeat them. The goal is to defeat them before they reach Momo because if they do, Momo loses a life. And she doesn’t have 9 lives to spare, she only has 5.

If you can’t make it to level 5, let me tell you what happens. Momo gets on a magic broom and flies off to fight the ghost that stole her spell book. But the ghost uses the spell book, and now Momo has to fight a giant, three-eyed ghost (skip to 5:56 in the video below to see this terrifying ghost).

Lose all 5 lives and an endgame screen will show up. It displays your score, lets you replay the last level, start a new game, and share your score via Google+, Twitter, Facebook, or email.

Momo, the star of Google’s 2016 Halloween doodle, is based on a real cat. Momo, the in-game cat, is inspired by Momo, a real-life black cat that belongs to Doodler Juliana Chen.

Speaking about black cats, the winner of the Global Candy Cup, last year’s Halloween doodle, was Yellow Witch and her black cat.

Back in 2015, Google’s Halloween doodle asked you to pick between 4 extraordinary witches: the nearsighted Blue Witch, the opportunistic and wickedly fast Red Witch, the cat loving Yellow Witch, and the literature obsessed Green Witch. After picking a team, you could play throughout the day to add to your team’s score. The team with the highest score got to go home with the Cup.
