Google is such a big part of everyday life that we’ve even turned the name into a verb. You don’t say "search for it," you say "Google it," right?

Google may be an instantly recognizable name now, but the search engine wasn’t always named that. The name that Larry Page and Sergey Brin picked 18 years ago was BackRub – because the system checked backlinks to estimate the importance of a site. They eventually changed the name to Google, and we’re all very grateful for it.

Picking a name for a product or company isn’t easy. And, as the infographic below showcases, the first choice isn’t always the best one.
