The Nexus One is the first smartphone to be created by Mountain View-based search engine giant Google. We’ve known about the Nexus One ever since Google confirmed it is testing the device internally – that was back in December. The device has now been released to the public, it can be purchased online from this Google hosted web store. According to Google, the online store is meant to make things easy for the user.

“We’re pleased to announce a new way for consumers to purchase a mobile phone through a Google hosted web store. The goal of this new consumer channel is to provide an efficient way to connect Google's online users with selected Android devices. We also want to make the overall user experience simple: a simple purchasing process, simple service plans from operators, simple and worry-free delivery and start-up,” explained VP of Product Management, Mario Queiroz.

Purchase the Nexus One smartphone and you will get a device with the following features:
- 3.7” OLED display
- 1 GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon™ chipset
- 512MB Flash, 512MB RAM
- 5-megapixel camera
- Android 2.1 operating system
- Stereo Bluetooth
- GPS, light and proximity sensors, accelerometer, compass
- Multi-colored trackball that lights up when different events occur
- Dynamic noise suppression from Audience
- Voice-enabled keyboard
- Live Wallpapers
- 3D photo gallery
- A whole bunch of Google applications, like Gmail, Google Maps Navigation or Google Voice to name but a few.

It is a great device I know, but here’s what’s best about the Nexus One: it comes unlocked. Mario Queiroz again: “The web store allows you to purchase the Nexus One without operator service or with service from T-Mobile USA.” The unlocked version of the Nexus One will set you back $529. If you get the Nexus One with a 2-year contract from T-Mobile USA you can expect to pay just $179. Google hopes to add Verizon Wireless (US) and Vodafone (Europe) to the list of service providers soon.
