The standalone Google Maps app that recently went live on the App Store was downloaded more than 10 million times – and that’s in less than 48 hours.

Last week, Google rolled out the standalone Google Maps app for iPhone so that all the people who were dissatisfied with Apple’s Maps app could enjoy a properly good replacement. As you may already know, there was a time when Google Maps was the default map app on iOS – but Apple dropped Google’s product and replaced it with its own on iOS 6.

That wouldn’t have been a big deal if Apple’s product were any good – but it was terrible. So terrible that Apple had to issue a formal letter of apology to all its customers. So terrible that the Australian Police issued a warning stating you may put your life in danger by using Apple Maps. This warning was released after several motorists ended up 43 miles off track, stranded in a national park where there was no water supply and where the temperatures reached 114 degrees (46 degrees Celsius).

After this Apple Maps fiasco, the standalone Google Maps app was released for iOS and the launch was a big, big success. Senior Vice President, Commerce & Local at Google, Jeff Huber announced that in less than 48 hours after its release, the Google Maps app was downloaded more than 10 million times.

“We're excited for the positive reception of Google Maps for iPhone around the world. Congratulations to the Maps Team on the recognition for the passion and hard work they poured into it, for this release and over the last 7+ years,” said Huber.

Google Maps for iOS is available for free on App Store here.

Since we’re talking about millions, Apple recently announced that in just three days after the launch of the new iPhone 5 in China, more than 2 million devices were sold.
