Google Apps Sync for Microsoft Outlook
Mountain View search engine giant Google announced this week the availability of Google Apps Sync for Microsoft Outlook, the free utility that you can use to sync your email, calendar and contacts between Google Apps Premier or Google Apps Education edition and Microsoft Outlook. The move will allow users who wish to give up on Exchange to do so without having to give up on Outlook at the same time.
Software Engineer with the Google Apps Team, Eric Worth, comments: “Many business users prefer Gmail's interface and features to products they've used in the past. But sometimes there are people who just love Outlook. For them, we've developed Google Apps Sync for Microsoft Outlook. It enables Outlook users to connect to Google Apps for business email, contacts and calendar. And they can always use Gmail's web interface to access their information when they're not on their work computer.”
Google Apps Sync for Microsoft Outlook comes with the following features:
- Synchronize email, calendar and contacts. It should be noted here that email synchronization is much faster because IMAP and other syncing options have been replaced by the offline Gmail protocol.
- Free/Busy lookup and Global Address List functionality, meaning that it will be a piece of cake to schedule meetings with contacts, no matter if they use Google Calendar or Outlook Calendar.
- Easy to use data migration tool that will come in handy when you need to coy existing data from Exchange or Outlook.
Among the companies that have already started to offer Google Apps Sync are service providers NuVox, Netfirms and IKANO. Jim Akerhielm for example, who is the CEO of NuVox, says that “an incredible response to Google Apps from [our] customer base” has been detected. He added that NuVox is “excited that Google Apps Sync helps our customers stop running Exchange and spend more time focusing on their core business.”
