Following the terrorist attack in Paris, the “Je Suis Charlie” message went viral. The same message can be found on Google’s French Website and on Apple’s French website.

The companies posted the message to show solidarity with Charlie Hebdo, the weekly newspaper that had caricatured the Prophet Muhammad and consequently became the target of a terrorist attack that lead to the death of 12 people.

The quick story is this. On Wednesday, January 7, 2015, a couple of masked men carrying Kalashnikov rifles, a shotgun, and an RPG launcher entered the offices of Charlie Hebdo, a French satirical newspaper that had caricatured the Prophet Muhammad. After they entered the offices, the two gunmen opened fire while shouting "Allahu Akbar". The aftermath of the attack is quite tragic: 12 people dead and 11 people wounded.

Unsurprisingly, the Charlie Hebdo shooting caused an uproar. People took to the streets, world leaders expressed their regrets, social networks were flooded with messages about the shooting. A message that went viral following the shooting is “Je Suis Charlie” which translates to “I Am Charlie.” The message is posted all over the web, including on Google’s French Website and on Apple’s French website.

Visit Google’s French website and you will see a “Je Suis Charlie” square right underneath the search box.

Visit Apple’s French website and you will see a black banner down at the bottom, banner that features the aforementioned “Je Suis Charlie” message. By posting this message on its website, Apple shows that it is a supporter of freedom of speech and resistance to armed threats.

In related news, Apple just announced that 2014 was a great financial success and that 2015 is off to a great start. App sales generated over $10 billion in revenue in 2014, New Year’s Day 2015 marked the single biggest day ever in App Store sales history, during the first week of January 2015, people spent half a billion dollars on App Store purchases.
