Goodbye 'Single of the Week', Hello 'Free on iTunes'
Thought that Apple would leave you without free music? Think again! The “Single of the Month” promotion may have been discontinued, but Apple brought something better in its place: Free on iTunes.
The Free on iTunes section provides access to 16 free songs, not just 1. It also provides free access to full-length TV episodes. Isn’t that awesome?!
For more than a decade, Apple offered free access to music via the “Single of the Month” promotion. Each month for the past 11 years now, Apple fans from all over the world could get access to 1 song for free. Unfortunately for all these Apple fans, Apple discontinued the “Single of the Week” promotion earlier this month.
That’s right, the “Single of the Month” promotion that has been around for 11 years, got discontinued in January 2015. This prompted a lot of users to ask why would Apple do such a thing? They also asked if Apple was going to bring the promo back and if Apple plans to replace the decade-old promotion with something else.
And answer to all these question came this week. On Monday, Apple launched the Free on iTunes section, which is better than Single of the Week ever was. You see, Free on iTunes provides access to 16 songs, not just 1. On top of that, Free on iTunes provides access to free full-length episodes.
The only downside is that Free on iTunes is available in the US alone - at least for now. I remind you that the discontinued Single of the Week promo was internationally available.
