Gmailify: Gmail's Top-Notch Spam Protection, No Gmail Address Required

One of the many things that makes Gmail a top-notch email app is that it keeps annoying and potentially harmful spam messages at bay. Until now, only those who had a Gmail account could take advantage of this feature.

With the introduction of Gmailify, you can get the best of Gmail, even if you don’t have a Gmail account. Your Hotmail/Outlook.com or Yahoo! Mail account will do just fine.

What is Gmailify? And how does it work?

Gmailify is the next step in Google’s effort to make Gmail for Android as useful as possible.

About a year ago, Google introduced the option to manage all your email accounts from a single location: Gmail for Android. The app was no longer limited to @gmail accounts. You could sign into all your others email accounts, including @yahoo and @outlook, and keep an eye on all your inboxes, all within a single app – Gmail for Android.

All that was dependent on a key factor: that you already have a Gmail account. With the introduction of Gmailify, that key factor has been taken out of the equation. You can sign into the Gmail app with your existing @yahoo or @outlook account, enable Gmailify, and enjoy everything that Gmail has to offer:
  • Spam protection.
  • Emails are automatically sorted by type (updates, promotions, social).
  • Faster search.
  • Google Now notifications for travel and hotel reservations.
  • Better mail notifications on mobile.

“Gmailify links your existing account to Gmail so that you get all the bells and whistles—spam protection, inbox organization and even Google Now cards based on your mail—without having to leave your current address behind,” announced Software Engineer Michael Käser. “All you need to do is open the Gmail app, sign in to your email account(s), and enable Gmailify.”

The brand new Outlook.com is out of preview

While Google was busy introducing Gmailify, Microsoft had an announcement of its own: the new version of Outlook.com is out of preview and it is better than ever. It’s being rolled out to North America right now, and coming to other regions soon.

Here are the main things you can expect from the new Outlook.com:
  • Premium experience built on an Office 365-based infrastructure.
  • Deep Office integration so you can view or edit Word, PowerPoint and Excel documents and photos.
  • Attach files from Dropbox and Box right from your inbox.
  • Get more done with add-ins: add GIF animations from GIPHY, get useful information from Yelp, manage to-do list with Wunderlist.
  • Improved Skype integration so you can keep the conversation going without leaving your inbox.
  • Find and insert emojis into your emails, easily insert and edit images.
  • Use pins to keep important emails at the top of your inbox.
  • Search suggestions and refiners to help you quickly find what you’re looking for.
  • Quickly add someone to an email conversation by using @Mentions.

“Email remains the backbone of digital communications in today’s world and we’re committed to making email awesome with Outlook experiences at home and at work—across all the devices you use. Today’s milestone with Outlook.com is one more key step in that journey, and you can expect to see more improvements and enhancements over the coming months,” said Corporate VP for the Outlook Team, Javier Soltero.
