Google was glad to announce that version 3.0 of its Gmail app for iOS fetches emails faster than ever before. That is because Gmail version 3.0 comes with "background app refresh."

Thanks to this feature, the app can fetch emails even when it’s not open. When you do open the app, all your emails will be there, ready for you to read them.

I like things to be done efficiently, I like them to be done quickly, and I like them to be done well. When it comes to emails, I certainly don’t like to wait around for my messages. I want to get them as quickly as possible. If you’re like me, you’re going to love what comes next.

Google recently updated Gmail for iOS to version 3.0 and the great news is that the app focuses on getting your email messages as quickly as possible. You see, Gmail 3.0 comes with a new background app refresh feature. In the past, Gmail would fetch your emails when you opened the app. Thanks to this new feature, Gmail fetches your emails even when it’s not open.

Software Engineer Melissa Dominguez explains:
“Whether you’re checking your email first thing in the morning or as you’re waiting in line at the grocery store, you want to get your messages as quickly as possible. With today’s update to the Gmail iOS App, it’s easier to do just that. The app now fully supports background app refresh, which means your Gmail messages will be pre-fetched and synced so they’re right there when you open the app—no more annoying pauses while you wait for your inbox to refresh.”

The background app refresh feature works with iPhones powered by iOS 7. At least one type of notification (badge, alert, or banner) needs to be enabled for the feature to work.

Gmail for iOS is available for download for free in the App Store.
