At the start of the week Redmond-based software developer Microsoft released a second Beta version of codename Geneva, its next-generation identity management solution. Geneva Beta 2 was showcased at the Microsoft TechEd North America 2009 event which kicked off yesterday, the 11th of May, and will last until the end of the week, on the 15th of May. According to Director of Product Management with Microsoft’s Identity & Security Business Group, the final version of Geneva will be rolled out in the second half of the current year.

The following components of Geneva Beta 2 have been released and are out there for public evaluation:
-Geneva Framework, which gives developers pre-built .NET security logic for building claims-aware applications and improving ASP.NET or WCF applications
- Geneva Server security token service (STS) which issues and transforms claims, enable federations, and manages user access.
- Windows CardSpace Geneva which help developers in building customer authentification experiences and helps the user in navigating access decisions.

A more detailed presentation of what’s new in Geneva Beta 2 is available here.

“Geneva” is Microsoft’s open platform for user access that helps companies simplify access to applications and other systems with an interoperable claims-based model. “Geneva” includes three components for enabling claims-based access. The “Geneva” platform improves developer efficiency and application security by externalizing identity activities from inside applications to a robust external service. Using the Geneva Framework, an ASP or WCF developer can outsource authentication to a security token server (STS), such as Geneva Server, where options to address evolving security or deployment requirements are readily available. An STS provides applications tokens that include claims, identity data about users useful for authorization, without requiring the application to look up those values,” explained Microsoft.
