When it comes to editing photos, in the Windows camp there is Photoshop, while in the Linux world there is the GIMP (short for GNU Image Manipulation program), which was recently updated to version 2.6.4. This piece of software which is distributed for free, can be used to perform tasks such as image composition and authoring and photo retouching, among other things.

The great thing about the GIMP is that it will easily address all your photo editing needs. Let’s say you just need a basic paint toll – GIMP can do that for you; let’s say that you need an online batch processing system –GIMP can do that too; let’s say you need a to convert and extensively edit images – GIMP will gladly provide. Since the GIMP is designed to be expandable and extensible, you could always add a plug-in that will aid you in getting the job done, whatever that job entails.

So what exactly can you expect to get from the GIMP? Here is a quick list:
- The user interface can be customized to fit your needs or visual requirements.
- It provides extensive hardware support.
- Support a wide range of formats (its native format is .xcf).
- It allows for digital retouching and photo enhancing.
- It has plug-in, layer, and animation support. It even has full alpha channel support.
- Can be used on several platforms.
- The scripting language and compression is built in.

The list could go on an on, but I think this is enough to give you a clear idea of just what the GIMP can do.

“What can I say, if some other image editor surpasses GIMP in terms of features then so be it. I suspect though that once we have finished the work we are doing currently doing, GIMP will be very attractive to the people currently turning to dedicated programs for high-bit depth RAW processing for example. I find competition (if one can use that term) nothing but interesting,” says GIMP developer Martin Nordholst in an interview by Joel Cornuz.
