Until the end of the working week, at 23:59PM on the 23rd of April, Skype is making Skype Access, the feature that allows you to easily connect to WiFi, free at over 100,000 hotspots across the world. The company decided to offer free WiFi in order to ease the users’ travel pains.

As you may already know, the air traffic situation in Northern Europe has pretty much grinded to a halt because the Eyjafjallajokull erupted in Iceland. The air traffic is now starting to return to normal, meaning that numerous Skype users will be spending a lot of time in airports. To help them stay in touch with the people they care about, Skype decided to make Skype Access available for free.

“We’re removing the normal charges made for Skype Access until the end of the week so that you can surf the web, email and make free Skype-to-Skype voice and video calls at over 100,000 WiFi hotspots in cafés, hotels and airports worldwide – including the vast majority of international airports,” explained Skype’s Peter Parkes.

Alongside call transfer, a new call quality indicator, a better first run experience and HD-ready, Skype Access is one of the features to be found in the latest Windows version of Skype, mainly Skype 4.2. With Skype Access you can pay for the minute for WiFi access. With a single mouse click you can use your Skype Credit and go online to send an email message or make a Skype call. You no longer have to go searching for your credit card and fiddle with login details to access a WiFi network.

To take Skype up on their offer all you need is a connection to a Skype Access compatible hotspot and the latest version of Skype. The latest versions of the popular instant messaging and VoIP client are Skype 4.2 for Windows and Skype 2.8 for Mac.
