Free Anonymous BitTorrent Service: BitBlinder
It is no wonder that people like P2P file sharing and I’m sure it comes as no surprise when I say that torrent trackers aid countless users out there in finding pretty much anything they want. The thing is that with The Pirate Bay trial still fresh in mind and with Mininova having just entered a civil trial, it is becoming increasingly evident that we need a free service for BitTorrent anonymity. BitBlinder is a new open source project that says it can deliver BitTorrent anonymity for free.
According to the people behind BitBlinder, the free cross-platform open source project will provide much needed functionality on several levels. It will make BitTorrent transfers anonymous for starters; then it will hide your IP address while you surf then net; and last but not least, it will help you bypass certain web filters. On top of that BitBlinder aims to provide support for multiple platforms (Windows support already here, Mac OS X support in the works) and aims to be compatible with a lot more applications (email, IM client, etc).
“We want to make online anonymity fast, usable, and ubiquitous to the point that organizations give up on spying and filtering us. BitBlinder is actually built on much of the same technology as TOR, though we have a completely separate network,” explained Josh Albrecht, one of the creators of BitBlinder, in an interview for TorrentFreak.
BitBlinder, as mentioned above, is capable of providing 3 things: anonymous BitTorrent transfers, hide your IP, and bypass filters. Let’s take a closer look at them:
- Anonymous BitTorrent downloads: BitBlinder employs a sophisticated P2P network that does not connect your computer directly to the host; instead it passes traffic though other BitBlinder users. The data that you get is encrypted and passed through multiple peers before it actually gets to you.
- IP address hiding: as data passes from peer to peer, each peer only gets to see the IP of the next peer in the chain. This way the IP address of the original requester or sender is hidden.
- Bypass web filters: as Josh Albrecht put it, the creators of BitBlinder are working hard to get it to be able to bypass filters that block ports, IPs, or inspect the traffic itself for certain protocols.
