Swarm, the mobile app that Foursquare is forcing you to get, has been rolled out to Microsoft’s Windows Phone Store. If you want to be able to check-in from your Windows Phone, you need to get the Swarm app for Windows Phone.

“We’re so excited to announce Swarm is now available to download on Windows Phone,” said the Foursquare team on its blog. “It’s the best way to keep up and meet up with your friends, so pin it to your start screen today.”

The functionality you get from Foursquare, the location-based social networking app for mobile devices, can be divided in two categories:
  1. Discover great places around you.
  2. Check-in and meet up with friends.
As reported in July, Foursquare underwent a substantial transformation – the logo changed to something that better represents the new Foursquare, the app’s interface was revamped, and check-ins were moved to a new app called Swarm.

With the old Foursquare, you could discover great places and you could check-in. With the new Foursquare, the ability to check-in is gone. You can check-in only if you have the Foursquare and the Swarm app. You see, the two work seamlessly together. If you use Foursquare alone, there’s no check-in button on the app’s interface. But if you use Foursquare and Swarm, there is a check-in button that you can use.

The Swarm app used to be available only for Apple’s and for Google’s mobile operating system. But as of this week, the app is also available for Microsoft’s mobile OS. Or to put it in other words, the Swarm app is now available for iOS, Android, and Windows Phone.
“Swarm is awesome for checking in and letting your friends know what you’re up to but also awesome for seeing who is out nearby and who might want to hang out later,” said Microsoft’s Brandon LeBlanc.

In related news, do you know who else is forcing you to get a secondary app? Facebook! The option to send and receive messages has been taken out of the Facebook app and made exclusive for the Messenger app. Read more about this here.
