Flock: A Very Popular Firefox-based Browser with Facebook Users
Flock, for those of you who are do not know this, is a web browser built on the Firefox codebase. But what Flock does is take the browser experience in a new direction by addressing the social networking needs of the user. And it seems to be working. Flock’s Dan Burkhart has recently announced that Flock’s total unique users on Facebook tops the 2 million mark.
As a little side note, if I may, the latest statistics showed that in September the number of Facebook accounts reached and exceeded the 300 million mark. Statistics also showed that more than 65 million people actively use the social networking site on their mobile devices.
“We just hit a really nice milestone that we’d like to share with everyone. Flock just exceeded 2 million total users on Facebook. Of total Flock users, those who are active on Facebook have grown 280% in the first three quarters of 2009. We are honored to have this many people from around the world electing to make the switch to experience the social web with Flock as their browser of choice. Flock is an independent effort, and as such we are even more critically dependent on our fans to spread the word about the Flock browser. We are humbled and honored by this vote of confidence and look forward to evolving the Flock product to continually improve the web experience for our fans.” commented Vice President of Marketing, Dan Burkhart.
I would like to play my part in spreading the word about Flock too, and I am going to take the technical route. Here is a brief presentation of what is new in the latest version of the browser, Flock 2.5 (the longer presentation is available here).
- You can read Twitter replies in the Flock sidebar and you can save Twitter searches. The sidebar also provides the option to reply to various tweets and click on any link provided in a tweet.
- Twitter Search support added to MyWorld.
- Use Facebook Chat no matter what web page you visit.
- Drag and drop content (videos, photos, URLs) to share it.
If you would like to get Flock 2.5, a download location is available here.
