Five Devices that Are Nothing but a Waste of Money Nowadays

There was a time when it made sense to purchase a standalone GPS device. But since smartphones are the norm now and since smartphones have built-in GPS functionality, purchasing such a device is now nothing but a waste of money. There’s no point in purchasing a GPS device if you already have a smartphone with GPS capabilities.

That is one of five devices I think are no longer needed because they have been replaced by something newer. Check out the other devices I think might be a waste of money below.

DVDs, DVD players, and other items of the sort are a waste of money. We no longer need to store movies on DVDs and we no longer need to use DVD players to watch movies. Movies can be streamed from a smartphone to the TV, smart TVs can access videos online, you can get a subscription to Netflix or another similar service. Videos and movies are so easily accessible that using DVDs and DVD players is a thing of the past.

The cloud made Flash drives obsolete. There was a time when you needed to purchase a Flash drive if you wanted to be able to take files with you. But thanks to the cloud and cloud storage services like Dropbox, Google Drive, Box, or SkyDrive, you have seamless access to all the files stored in the cloud. Instead of spending money on a Flash drive, it would be best to spend some money and get more from your cloud service.

Compact cameras and camcorders – it’s the same story as with the standalone GPS. If you have a smartphone, you can use it to shoot photos and to shoot videos. Smartphones nowadays have powerful cameras that do a proper job. A mid-range smartphone can put my old point-and-shoot camera to shame. The old thing could not record more than 30 seconds of video for example.

You could spend some money to get an MP3 player, but why would you? Smartphones can stream music and they can store huge amounts of music. Even older phones can store and play music.
