Mozilla announced that more than a million dollars were raised as part of the Firefox Challenge which has now come to an end. This money was raised with the aim of supporting social and humanitarian causes.

This year's Firefox Challenge, a campaign powered by CrowdRise, campaign meant to raise awareness and money for social and humanitarian causes, has come to an end. Mozilla, the organization behind the very popular Firefox browser was glad to announce that more than 1 million dollars were raised for charity this time.

In all, more than 100 charities competed in the Firefox challenge. Out of them all, three came out on top. The winners of this year’s Firefox Challenge are, drum rolls please, as follows:

1st Place – The Ian Somerhalder Foundation
As the winner of the competition, this foundation won a donation of $50,000 from Mozilla. As part of the Firefox Challenge, actor Ian Somerhalder managed to raise more than $122,000 for the foundation that carries his name. If you’re not familiar with it, the Ian Somerhalder Foundation aims to empower, educate and collaborate with people and projects to positively impact the planet and its creatures.

2nd Place – Comfort the Children, International
Jimmy Kimmel supported this organization (it works with Kenyan communities to provide resources that create sustainable change) and managed to raise more than $121,000. For coming in second in the Firefox Challenge, the organization got a $30,000 donation from Mozilla.

3rd Place – Bat World Sanctuary

A donation of $20,000 is the prize the Bat World Sanctuary earns for getting 3rd place. That is on top of the $105,000 raised as part of the challenge. The Bat World Sanctuary rescues and provide shelter and care to bats and is recognized as the world’s leader in bat care standards and cutting-edge rehabilitation treatments.

As a little side note, I would like to point out that last year’s Firefox Challenge only managed to raise about half a million for charity. This year’s Firefox Challenge was more successful, and that is always a nice thing.
