Firefox Celebrates 5th Anniversary Today

Do you know what day is today? No, I don’t mean Monday, the 9th of November. Five years ago, on this precise day, the Mozilla Foundation launched a piece of software that would become the second most popular web browser on the market, mainly Firefox. A long time has passed since the launch of Firefox 1.0. Firefox has grown, has gotten better, and the users have grown more attached to this properly good piece of software.

Here are some fun facts about Firefox that you should know about; facts that you could present at your Firefox party. You know, the one the Mozilla Foundation advised Firefox users to throw, the party at which you could find a projector and shine the Firefox logo on the wall. Or if you’re really resourceful, get a searchlight and create a Firefox “bat signal”. Here are the facts I was talking about:

- More than 1 million people downloaded Firefox 1 within the first 4 days of its launch.
- Worldwide, the number of Firefox users grew to 330 million.
- About one quarter of all internet users have Firefox installed on their machine.
- Firefox provides support for more than 70 languages.
- There are more than 7,000 add-ons the Firefox user can use to customize the browser.
- Back in August, the one billionth Firefox download was recorded.

“Mozilla has a unique place on the Internet. Driven to help improve it as part of our mission expect us to express opinions on decisions that affect its future. We act both through direct action but also through indirect action – sometimes our effects are as important as our actions. We will continue to protect users and we’ll continue to do everything they can to make it possible for the next set of people to come along and build the next great web site. It’s been a great five years. Let’s make it another five and keep the web moving forward for the benefit of everyone,” commented Mozilla Evangelist Christopher Blizzard

If you would like to get Firefox, a download location is available here.
