The internet is already an endless source of information and amusement, but who would have thought that a simple Firefox add-on would turn it into a multiplayer game for you and your friends to enjoy? The add-on I am talking about is called The Nethernet, comes free of charge, and will transform the web and various online sites into your very own virtual playground. The only question that you need to ask yourself is this: Will you behave, or will you turn the web into a place of mayhem?

With a game HUD toolbar in Firefox, players can bomb each other, wage war over web sites, and lead other users on web missions. Ordinary web sites host items and currency. The Nethernet is an MMO RPG into our WWW! Clicking around the internet turns into experience points and currency. A battle between Order and Chaos rages online, between people tagging and people spamming; you'll have the weapons you need to wage information war in your browser,” explains GameLayers.

Any web page on the word wide web can become your personal playground, be it Facebook, Wikipedia, YouTube, Flickr, Google or Amazon. It does not really matter, the choice is up to you. If you have any problems uncovering new sites, there is a fix for that. As a matter of fact there are several fixes at your disposal and they all come under the form of a Firefox add-on: Random Site, Fast Forward and Random Page.

Before you rush of to play the game, here are a few more bits and pieces you need to be made aware of. Ethernet is not a completely new game, it is an evolution of the highly popular PMOG game developed by GameLayers. Users familiar with PMOG will notice these changes: grenades, ever crates, dodge and disarm (disables grenades). There is a downside as well: The Ethernet is currently in Beta, meaning that you might encounter some issues. If this happens, you are very well advised to inform the developers about it.

If you would like to get The Nethernet, a download location is available here.
