Firefox 3.6 Beta 4 to Drop Later Today or Early Tommorow
The 4th Beta version of the Firefox 3.6 browser is due to be released later today or early tomorrow, Firefox Director Mike Beltzner announced. The first Beta version was launched at the start of the month; then Firefox 3.6 Beta 2 was released approximately two weeks later; Firefox 3.6 Beta 3 was released even sooner than that, about one week later. If Mozilla stays true to its word and releases Firefox 3.6 Beta 4 today, that would be precisely one week away from the release of Beta 3.
Here is what Mike Beltzner said about the Firefox 3.6 Beta 4 release: “Due to the excellent work on knocking down the Firefox 3.6 Beta topcrash list, we've decided that it would be worthwhile to ship another beta update to our close to half million testers to confirm our expectations. If all goes well, we'll look to ship updates to our beta users late Wednesday or early Thursday; either way, it will be up to those outside the USA to drive it over the line, as our American friends enjoy their well-earned Thanksgiving holidays.”
When Firefox 3.6 Beta 4 is rolled out, it will come with 20 or so fixes and with all the other highlights we’ve seen in previous Betas. These highlights are:
- The manner in which 3rd party software integrates with the Firefox has been changed in order to enhance the browser’s stability.
- Added the ability run scripts asynchronously and thus speed up page load times.
- New API to give add-ons access to Firefox’s geolocation features
- The Firefox components directory is locked down.
- A mechanism that prevents Firefox from crashing when dealing with incompatible software.
- Built-in support for Firefox Personas.
- The user will be alerted when a plugin needs to be updated.
- Full screen and poster frames support for open, native video.
- WOFF font format support.
- The performance of the JavaScript engine has been enhanced.
- New CSS, DOM and HTML5 web technologies support.
