Firefox 3.1 Moves on to Beta 3, Not Release Candidate
Earlier this month, on the 12th to be more precise, Mozilla decided to delay the release of its Firefox 3.1 Beta 2 browser, due to numerous bugs and blockers. At the time it was rumored that after Beta 2, Mozilla will not put out a release candidate (RC), but instead move on to a third Beta installment. Mike Beltzner, lead program developer with Mozilla, has recently come out and proposed just that.
“The decision was to propose that we add a third beta milestone for Firefox 3.1, as well as a requirement that by Thursday, December 4th, all component owners re-triage their blocker lists in order to identify which require beta exposure, and also to develop estimates for driving those lists to zero. From here forward we will focus on blocker numbers at our weekly meetings, requiring component leads to present plans for reducing the numbers over time to ensure we're trending in the right direction. We believe that we can add this milestone without a major impact on the shipping schedule for the release,” said Mike Beltzner
The good news is that with this Beta 3 iteration, the testers working on Firefox 3.1 will get a small breather in locating and fixing software bugs, as well as get more time to test some of the brand new features that v 3.1 of the Mozilla browser will bring to the table (such as “porn mode” browsing, TraceMonkey, Worker Threads, and Speculative Parsing).
With Firefox 3.1 Beta 3, Mozilla will no longer accept new features implementation, meaning that the final version will have all the bits and pieces that the Beta 3 will have, just that it will work in a more stable manner. The only changes that the Mozilla development team will accept are string chances (limited ones at that). According to Mike Beltzner, the code will be frozen as of January 2009.
