Even though most Mozilla fans have switched to Firefox 3.5 (downloaded more than 39 million times at the time of writing this article, according to Mozilla’s live download tracker), the simple truth of the matter is that some users did not upgrade, they stuck with Firefox 3.0.X. Since these users need to stay safe while surfing the web, just like Firefox 3.5 users, the Mozilla Foundation has issed an update for the browser – Firefox 3.0.12. This update is meant to address a total of 6 security issues (5 critical, 1 high) as well as make the browser more stable by fixing a few bugs.

Firefox Launch Coordinator, Samuel Sidler, comments: “As part of Mozilla's ongoing security and stability update process, Firefox 3.0.12 is now available for Windows, Mac, and Linux for free download. We strongly recommend that all Firefox 3.0.x users upgrade to this latest release. If you already have Firefox 3.0.x, you will receive an automated update notification within 24 to 48 hours. This update can also be applied manually by selecting "Check for Updates..." from the Help menu.”

Firefox 3.0.12 highlights:
- Fixed a total of 6 security vulnerabilities, 5 of them have been deemed by Mozilla as critical, meaning an attacker could exploit them to run code on the targeted machine. A detailed presentation of all the security holes Firefox 3.0.12 plugs is available here.
- Several stability problems have been fixed.
- Firefox no longer freezes when accessing the Java plug-in on Windows XP.
- Firefox used to improperly save data when the user stored the home directory in a remote location via AFP (Apple Filling Protocol). This issue has been resolve.
- Certain AppleScripts failed to return the proper information; this issue has been addressed as well.

Please note that Mozilla will provide support for Firefox 3.0.X until January, 2010. Make sure to switch to newer Firefox versions by then. Right now you could upgrade to Firefox 3.5 for example – here’s a detailed look at what the browser can provide.
