Final Version of Ubuntu 9.04, the Jaunty Jackalope, Released

It took some work (6 Alphas, 1 Beta and 1 RC), but the final version of Ubuntu 9.04 has finally been made available for download (desktop, server and netbook edition). While Canonical works on the next Ubuntu distro, mainly Ubuntu 9.10 codename Karmic Koala, all we have to do is play with the Jaunty Jackalope and the long list of features and enhancements it has to offer.

Technical details about Ubuntu 9.04, the Jaunty Jackalope:
- GNOME 2.6 desktop environment with: Brasero all-in-one CD/DVD burning app; updated gnome-display properties that allows for enhanced multiple monitors handling;
- X.Org server 1.6 and X.Org 7.4
- Notification preferences allow you to set preferences for notification icons. New notification styles.
- Improved boot performance. You can expect to boot the OS in under 20 seconds if you run it on a high performance configuration.
- Linux Kernel 2.6.28
- Ext4 filesystem support
- Eucalyptus, an open source technology featured in Ubuntu 9.04 Server Edition, allows you to set up your own cloud computing environment.
- New “"dovecot-postfix" package that “provides an easy-to-deploy mail server stack, with support for SMTP, POP3, and IMAP with TLS and SASL.”
- Compiz Fusion 0.8.2
- Mesa 3D DRI 7.4
- New bootsplash, new login screen, 2 new wallpapers and 3 new themes. Countdown timer for login out, shutting down and restarting the machine.
- Automatic keyboard detection.
- Computer Janitor system cleaner.
- Bundled software apps: OpenOffice.org 3.0.1, Compiz 0.8.2, Pidgin 2.5.6, The GIMP 2.6.6, Transmission 1.51, Mozilla Firefox 3.0.9, F-Spot 0.5.0.3, Rhythmbox 0.12.0 (to name but a few).
