Feature Rich Yahoo! Mail Experiencing Performance Problems

This month we’ve covered Yahoo!’s mail client multiple times, and each time it was because Yahoo! Mail had some new feature or some enhancement to boast about. This time Yahoo! Mail makes the headlines because it is experiencing some performance problems; and to be more precise, whenever you attempt to access your inbox, Yahoo! Mail takes quite a long time to load.

The issue may be an annoying one for the end user, but in all fairness to Yahoo! and its email client, the problem is to be found with other software applications and not solely with Yahoo! Mail. It seems that Yahoo! Mail takes a long time to load because it doesn’t play well with Symantec’s security software products.

“Some Yahoo! Mail users may be experiencing some slowness with Yahoo Mail recently. The issue is occurring due to a conflict between Yahoo! Mail and various Symantec (Norton) products including anti-virus/security software. Our engineering team has isolated the issue and is rolling out a fix,” a representative of the Yahoo! Mail Team explained.

There is one simple workaround that you can employ if you have Symantec software installed on your machine and Yahoo! Mail takes forever to load: you can just disable Symantec’s software while you access your Yahoo! Mail inbox. When you are done checking your mail, re-enable the security software solution. If you are worried that the email attachments you want to download might pose a risk to your system, the Yahoo! Mail Team says you need not be as Yahoo! Mail scans attachments for viruses before downloading.

If disabling your Symantec software solutions does not sound like a terribly appealing solution, rest assured that Yahoo! already has a fix for the issue and is currently rolling it out to users all over the world. Rolling out the fix kicked off on the 17th of June, which coincided with the launch of the iPhone OS 3.0, and should reach all Yahoo! Mail users in the “next couple of days.”

Now let’s take a look at the other reasons Yahoo! Mail made the headlines this month, in chronological order:
