Facebook's Place Tips Offer Useful Info about Locations

Facebook recently announced the launch of a new feature called “place tips.” This new feature’s goal is to provide useful, relevant, and fun information about locations.

It detects your location and uses it to bring up a "place tips" prompt directly in your newsfeed. Tap the prompt and you will get to access info about the location, photos of your friends at that location, and more.

“Starting today on Facebook for iPhone, place tips may show up at the top of your News Feed when you’re out and about,” announced Product Manager Mike LeBeau on Thursday, January 29, 2015. “When you tap on place tips, you’ll see a series of cards with info about the place you’re at. If you choose to view place tips, you’ll find things like posts and photos your friends have shared with you about that place.

Say you’re at the Dominique Ansel Bakery in New York, enjoying a delicious cotton soft cheesecake. Facebook on your iPhone detects your location and brings up place tips in your newsfeed. Said place tips can include photos of your friends at the Dominique Ansel Bakery, posts from the bakery’s Facebook page, popular items from the bakery’s menu, upcoming events that will take place at the bakery, and even reviews for the bakery.

As I mentioned above, Facebook detects your location to offer relevant place tips. I bring this up only to add that the app detects your location using cellular networks, Wi-Fi, GPS and, in certain locations, Facebook Bluetooth beacons.

If you don’t like the new place tips feature, you can turn it off. You can do so from Settings -> Location.
