Facebook recently announced that its Messenger app reached an important milestone: more than 500 million people around the world use Messenger to stay in touch and communicate with their Facebook friends.

“This is an exciting milestone but with a half billion people relying on Messenger to communicate and connect, it is also a reminder that there is so much left for us to do,” commented Director of Product Management, Peter Martinazzi.

Messenger, Facebook’s first standalone app, focuses on a single bit of functionality: messaging. As its name so adequately points out, this app can be used to message your Facebook friends. If you want to say hi to a colleague, if you want to chat with a friend, if you want to have a group conversation with several family members, you can easily do so with the Messenger app on your iPhone, Android, or Windows Phone.

You don’t have to limit your conversations to text. When text simply isn’t enough, you can spice things up by using stickers. You can also take a selfie and share it via Messenger or you can shoot a video and share it with the person you’re talking to. Furthermore, you can use the Messenger app to make free calls over WiFi. So overall, Messenger is a great app that will help you easily reach all the people in your life.

Speaking about that, Peter Martinazzi explained that the Messenger development team continued to improve the app’s speed and reliability and that Messenger continues to evolve and improve by receiving updates every two weeks.

The only thing that annoys me about Messenger is that Facebook forced it upon us. This summer, Facebook announced that it is taking the messaging functionality out of the Facebook app and transferring it to the Messenger app. This means that you can use the Facebook app to check your news feed, post updates, like posts, and so on. But if you want to chat with someone, you have to switch to the Messenger app.
