An accident on Facebook’s end a little while ago drew attention to the fact that the social networking site is testing Facebook Lite. Numerous Facebook users recently got a message inviting them to test Facebook Lite; they couldn’t sign up and test the darn thing because it was all a slipup and they were never meant to get the message in the first place.

Here’s what the message said:
“You have been selected as a beta tester for Facebook Lite!
We are building a faster, simpler version of Facebook that we call Facebook Lite. It’s not finished yet and we have plenty of kinks to work out, but we would love to get your feedback on what we have built so far.
Check out Facebook Lite now at http://lite.facebook.com.”

Upon pulling the message, Facebook released an official statement confirming the fact that it is testing Facebook Like: “We are currently testing a simplified alternative to Facebook.com that loads a specific set of features quickly and efficiently. Similar to the Facebook experience you get on your mobile phones, Facebook “Lite” is a fast-loading, simplified version of Facebook that enables people to make comments, accept Friend requests, write on people’s Walls, and look at photos and Status updates. The test was temporarily exposed to a larger set of users by mistake. We have not opened up access to lite.facebook.com to all users at this time. People who are not part of the test and are trying to access “Lite” will be directed to Facebook.com as usual.”

Facebook Lite is being tested in countries where Facebook is just now starting to see an increase in users, countries where people setting up their Facebook account for the first time would like to kick things off with a more simple experience, explained the social networking site. According to Facebook Lite Beta testers, the stream only displays status updates, likes and comments; the small profile boxes have been removed, the publisher is not open by default; and the profile page tabs are displayed in the left hand side of the page.
