Lionhead Studios just announced that Fable Legends, the forthcoming adventure in the genre-defining Fable series, will be free to play.

Earlier this year, Lionhead Studios announced that Fable Legends will be cross-playable on both Xbox One with Xbox Live Gold and on Windows 10 PCs.

Lionhead Studios, which is part of Microsoft Studios since 2006, explained that it wants to make sure that as many people as possible will have the chance to play Fable Legends. To achieve this goal, Lionhead Studios announced that:
  • Fable Legends will be cross-playable.
  • Fable Legends will be free to play.
What does cross-playable mean? It means that you will be able to play it on both Xbox One with Xbox Live Gold and on PCs that run the Windows 10 operating system.

What does free to play mean? It means that you won’t have to spend a dime to play Fable Legends from beginning-to-end. Without spending any money at all, you will get to go through the entire storyline and play all the quests. Just by playing the game, you can earn any element that effects the gameplay. Lionhead Studios won’t charge you for updates that introduce new quests, new creatures, or other new elements.

If you’re not going to spend your hard earned money, what are you going to spend in Fable Legends? The answer is silver. As you play the game, you earn silver; then you can spend that silver on unlocking heroes and on making your heroes or your creatures more powerful.

If you do want to spend money, Lionhead Studios won’t get in your way. There will be an option to use real-world money to purchase gold. Then you can use the gold to purchase, well, many of the items that are also available for silver.

“We want to make sure our approach to free to play gives everyone the freedom to enjoy the game to its full extent, and that’s exactly how we’ll continue to develop the game after launch,” said the Fable Legends team.

Fable Legends is currently in Beta.
