During your entire life, you will sample only a few music genres. Do you want to know what you’re missing out on? Do you want to take a look at the many, many music genres that are out there?

If you said yes, then it is my pleasure to introduce a web app called Every Noise at Once. It lists tons and tons of music genres. Click a genre and the web app will start playing a sample that’s representative of that music genre.

I am familiar with pop, rock, hard rock, metal, reggae, jazz, classic and even country music. But that’s where my knowledge of music genres ends. I am aware that there are many other music genres out there, but I’m not familiar with all of them.

Talk to me about neurostep, doomcore, shimmer pop, or nu gaze and I’ll give you a bewildered “what are you talking about?” look.

Luckily for me – and for you, if you’re like me – there is a web app out there that I can use to educate myself: Every Noise at Once.

It features two view modes: scan/map and list. No matter which view mode you select, Every Noise at Once presents a ton of music genres. If a genre catches your eye and you click on it, you will hear an example of what that genre sounds like. If you click the » symbol next to a genre, you will see a list of artists that play that genre.

“This is an ongoing attempt at an algorithmically-generated, readability-adjusted scatter-plot of the musical genre-space, based on data tracked and analyzed for 1349 genres by The Echo Nest,” it says on the official Every Noise at Once website. “The calibration is fuzzy, but in general down is more organic, up is more mechanical and electric; left is denser and more atmospheric, right is spikier and bouncier.”
