Social networking site Facebook isn’t just a handy way to stay in touch with friends and family and to reconnect with schoolmates and college buddies. It’s also a great tool in the hand of recruiters. Companies who want to offer you a job will look up your Facebook profile before they call you in for an interview. Also, when you apply for a job, the employer will not hesitate to look up your Facebook before setting up an interview. It pays then to keep your Facebook nice and clean.

As I recently found when I wanted to remove old content from my Facebook, it can be a big pain in the unmentionables to do that all on your own. A better way is to turn to software for help; it’s a lot better to let software do the hard work for you. The software that can do that is the handy Android app Exfoliate.

Programmer Michael Devine is the one who came up with the Exfoliate Android app and he did so for the precise reason I mentioned above. Earlier this year he was looking for a job and it occurred to him that if a potential employer were to look at this Facebook, that employer may not like everything that is up there. So he came up with Exfoliate, an app that makes it a breeze to remove old content from Facebook .

When I say old content I mean that you can use the app to remove posts, comments, likes, and photos from your wall and from your friends’ walls. The app can batch remove these if they are older than a time you specify. For example it can remove comments that are older than a year.

According to Michael Devine, there is no reason to leave old content on Facebook. Your friends will not look at it, you will probably not look at it, it’s just there taking up space. But if a potential employer were to see it, and if they took it out of context, it could cost you a job.

So if you want to scrub your Facebook clean of old content, go get the Exfoliate app from the Android Market here.
