It’s the best smartphone we’ve ever built. That’s how HTC introduced its brand new flagship, the HTC 10.

Now that HTC officially unveiled the HTC 10, we can finally bring you all the important details you need to know about it. Here goes.

What does it look like? It has a bold new design.

As the old saying goes, a picture is worth a thousand words. This certainly applies when you have to talk about how something looks like. So instead of talking about the bold new design of the new HTC 10, let’s watch the videos that HTC released.

"We employed a new approach to design with the HTC 10, which you can see in the all-metal body’s bold contours. The chamfered edges boast a slimmer look, and the full-glass front merges seamlessly into the metal body," HTC explained on its blog, adding that it didn’t sacrifice durability for beauty and that the HTC 10 was subjected to extreme temperature tests, drop tests, bend tests, scratch tests, and corrosion tests. Suffice it to say that the HTC 10 can handle the knocks, bumps and scratches of everyday use.

How’s the performance? Unparalleled, off the chart.

HTC says that the HTC 10 offers unparalleled performance. You know what that means, right? Time to see what’s under the hood. Time to check out the phone’s main specifications.

HTC 10 – Main specs
  • Operating system – Android 6.0 Marshmallow with HTC Sense.
  • Body– all-metal body, full-glass front, chamfered edges.
  • Display – 5.2-inch, 2560 x 1440, Super LCD 5, 564 PPI display.
  • Processor – 2.2GHz, 64-bit Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 processor.
  • Memory & storage – 4GB of RAM; 32GB or 64GB of storage (expandable up to 2TB via microSDXC).
  • Cameras – 5MP front camera and 12MP rear camera with optical image stabilization (both) and laser autofocus (just the rear one).
  • Sound – dual BoomSound speakers.
  • Connectivity– NFC, Bluetooth, WiFi, GPS, USB Type-C, DLNA, Miracast, Chromecast, AirPlay (HTC 10 is the first Android phone ever to support AirPlay streaming out of the box).
  • Sensors – ambient light sensor, proximity sensor, motion g-sensor, compass sensor, gyro sensor, magnetic sensor, fingerprint sensor, sensor hub.
  • Dimensions & weight – 145.9 x 71.9 x 3.0 – 9.0 mm; 161g.
  • Battery – 3,000mAh battery.
  • Colors – Carbon Grey, Glacier Silver, Topaz Gold, Camellia Red.

Focusing on the camera alone, I have to point out that HTC describes it as the “best smartphone camera available on the market today.” And to back up that claim, HTC lists the following features:
  • The world’s first optically stabilized, larger aperture f/1.8 lenses on both front and rear cameras
  • New larger sensors
  • 12 million new generation UltraPixels (1.55um per pixel).
  • Faster laser autofocus powering the main camera.
  • Wide angle lens and screen flash on the front UltraSelfie camera.

The camera can record 4K video and 24-bit Hi-Res audio. Speaking about audio, there are a few audio feature that just have to be mentioned:
  • Headphone amp that delivers two times the power of a conventional headphone amp.
  • Upscaling capabilities that can take audio from 16-bit to 24-bit.
  • High-performance digital-to-analog conversion.
  • Personal Audio Profile system that you can use to create a unique profile tuned to your individual requirements.
  • Re-engineered HTC BoomSound Hi-Fi edition speakers.
  • The best Hi-Res Audio certified inbox earphones yet.

Powering the HTC 10’s hardware is a 3,000mAh battery. I bring this up only to mention that the 3.0 Rapid Charger can get it to 50% in just 30 minutes. On top of that, the HTC 10 comes with a new PowerBotics system that boosts battery life by 30%. This means a full charge will last up to 2 days.

Powered by Android 6.0 Marshmallow

The software that controls everything the HTC 10 can do is Android 6.0 Marshmallow, coupled with HTC’s own HTC Sense. You’ll be glad to know that HTC reduced the number of pre-loaded apps and bloatware, and you’ll also be glad to know that HTC focused on making the software responsive and fast. The display is 50% more responsive to touch, apps launch twice as fast, the fingerprint scanner unlocks the device in 0.2 seconds, and the Boost+ app smartly tunes performance, improves power consumption, clears junk files, and lets you lock apps.

With other smartphones, the screen interface is confined to a grid of apps. The new Freestyle Layout on the HTC 10 lets you put icons, stickers and widgets anywhere you like. You can further customize your visual experience by accessing the thousands of professional-looking themes that come with the latest version of HTC themes.

Meet the new HTC Ice View cover

Priced at $49.99, the new Ice View cover for the HTC 10 is presented as “the most versatile case yet.” It is a see-through case that protects the phone while at the same time letting you interact with the phone without having to lift the cover.

Pricing and availability

Pre-orders for the HTC 10 kicked off in the US on April 12. You can get an unlocked HTC 10 right now from HTC for $699.

Seven hundred dollars is a lot of money, I know. Take the sting and $100 off by using a promo code at checkout. The codes that you can use are:
  • USA: HTC1008 (or HTC1009 if the first one doesn’t work).
  • Canada: HTCCA1008
  • UK: HTC10 (you’ll get 10% off and free express shipping).

The HTC 10 will go on sale early this May. You’ll be able to get it from Verizon or Spring, but not from AT&T. On the bright side, the unlocked HTC 10 is compatible with AT&T as well as T-Mobile.

If you’re from India, clicking the link will redirect you to the HTC 10 Lifestyle. It’s a less powerful version of the phone, a low-end cousin if you will, that HTC hopes will be more attractive to Indian customers.

It looks the same as the HTC 10, but it has a less powerful processor and 3GB of RAM instead of 4GB. On the bright side, it has the same display, the same all-metal body, the same cameras, the same BoomSound audio tech, and the same battery.
