At launch, the immensely popular Overwatch game featured a total of 21 heroes. Now it features 22, because Blizzard recently introduced a new hero, a support character called Ana.

Who is she, what is her backstory, and more importantly, what can she do? Answers to these questions and more, are available below. Pretty much everything there is to know about Ana is presented below.

Ana is a 60-year-old badass

Ana is one of the founding members of Overwatch and, believe it or not, she’s a 60 years old sniper and bounty hunter out of Cairo, Egypt. Those lines on her face suddenly make sense now, don’t they?

Ana is one of the best, if not the best sniper in the game’s universe. After the Omnic Crisis, snipers played a crucial role in Egypt, offering support to the country’s depleted and undermanned security forces. A skilled marksman with great instincts, Ana was a perfect fit for Overwatch. So she joined the Overwatch strike team and served for many years as Strike Commander Morrison's second-in-command. She didn’t step way from combat operations though, and remained on active duty well into her old age.

Things turned sour during a hostage rescue mission when Ana hesitated, giving Widowmaker the chance to shoot first.

Even though everyone thought Ana had been killed, she had in fact survived. She lost an eye, but at least she was still alive. Following her recovery, Ana decided to stay out of the world's growing conflicts. But that didn’t last long. Ana couldn’t look away when her city was threatened, so she once again joined the battle, determined to protect the country, her closest allies, and her family. Speaking of which…

Ana is Pharah’s mother

Pharah, the hero that can soar through the air with her blue combat armor, is Ana’s daughter. While the two are family, they’re aren’t very much alike. Ana is a support character, Pharah is an offense character. Ana uses a sniper rifle, Pharah uses a rocket launcher. Ana heals groups of allies, Pharah takes out groups of enemies with a continuous salvo of mini-rockets.

Pharah’s real name is Fareeha Amari. And in case you were wondering, she’s 32 years old. Unlike her mother, she was never part of Overwatch. It got disbanded before she could join and, to this day, Pharah mourn’s Overwatch's passing.

Ana has 4 useful abilities
  • Biotic rifle – shoots darts that cause ongoing damage to enemies but restore health to allies.
  • Sleep dart – puts an enemy to sleep (damage will wake the enemy).
  • Biotic grenade – deals damage to enemies or heals allies in a small area of effect. Affected enemies cannot be healed for a short time while affected allies receive increased healing from all sources.
  • Nano boost – temporarily gives an ally faster movement, more damage, and less damage taken from enemy attacks.
