Great news for fans of the Unreal Tournament first-person shooter: video game development company Epic Games announced that it is working on a new Unreal Tournament version. Work on the new version already started.

“Work on the future of Unreal Tournament begins today, and we’re happy to announce that we’re going to do this together, with you,” said Epic Games on Thursday, May 8th, 2014. “We know that fans of the game are as passionate about Unreal Tournament as we are. We know that you have great ideas and strong opinions about where the game should go and what it should be. So let’s do something radical and make this game together, in the open, and for all of us.”

Unreal Tournament, the first person shooter (FPS) video game of my teenhood, is coming back. It was the game of choice for many, many LAN parties back in the day, back when online multiplayer games were not the norm.

15 years after the launch of Unreal Tournament, Epic Games comes with this announcement: the company is working on a new version of the FPS video game. A new version of Unreal Tournament will be rolled out in the future. A small team of Unreal Tournament veterans already started work on the project. The project itself is an open collaboration between Epic Games, Unreal Tournament fans, and Unreal Engine 4 developers.

It will take some time until the new version will be playable. It will take “many months” until the new version will be rolled out. We don’t know how many months the development process will last, and Epic Games did not provide a release date. We do know that when the new Unreal Tournament will be released, it will be free and it will be available for Windows, Mac, and Linux. Epic Games will create a marketplace that will have mods and other content to sell.
