Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) and Mozilla Offer Support for iPhone Jailbreak
At the beginning of the week we were announcing that a document filed with the Copyright Office as part of the 2009 DMCA triennial rulemaking (Digital Millennium Copyright Act) brought to light the fact that Apple considers jailbreaking the iPhone a DMCA violation and copyright infringement. The iPhone may be one of the most sought-after devices on the market today, but Apple certainly did not win any points in the popularity department with this allegation.
The EFF (Electronic Frontier Foundation) was quick to spot back then that Apple’s claims would be hard to support in court and all this is nothing more than FUD (fear, uncertainty and doubt). The EFF supported Free Your iPhone group is now asking iPhone users to take a stand against Apple’s tyranny.
“Hundreds of thousands of cellphone owners have modified their phones to connect to the network or run the software of their choosing, and many more would like to. But the Digital Millennium Copyright Act poses a legal threat to phone users, even though the law was supposed to protect copyright owners and distributors of digital music and movies. This threat of litigation has driven consumers underground, stifling innovation and competition,” says Free Your iPhone.
The Mozilla Foundation, company better known for developing the Firefox browser, is also taking a stand against Apple and their decision that by jailbreaking the iPhone your are breaking the law. According to CEO John Lilly, Mozilla is not trying to criticize Apple, it is only trying to back the principle according to which the user should have the option to choose whether he wants to use the iPhone as it is, or jailbreak it. “Choice is good for users, and choice shouldn't be criminalized. The Internet is too important for all of us for that,” continued John Lilly.
