Apple announced that it is getting close to hitting 50 billion downloads from its well-known App Store. The lucky user who downloads the 50 billionth app will win a $10,000 gift card.

As time goes by, more and more apps are downloaded from Apple’s digital software store. Billions of downloads have been recorded since the App Store was rolled out to the public back in July 2008. It is now May 2013 and Apple was glad to announce that it is getting close to recording 50 billion downloads from the App Store. That is certainly an impressive achievement – and when the 50 billionth app will be downloaded, Apple will reward the lucky downloader with an App Store Gift Card worth $10,000.

The previous milestone, the 40 billion App Store downloads milestone was reached in January 2013. Apple used the occasion as an opportunity to make public some numbers that shed light on the App Store’s popularity:
  • 500 million – this is the number of active App Store accounts.
  • 750 million – the number of apps available for download/purchase in the App Store to users in 155 countries around the world.
  • 2 billion – the number of apps downloaded from the App Store during the month of December, 2012.
  • 7 billion – the amount of money earned by developers via the app Store.
  • 20 billion – the number of apps downloaded from the App Store this 2012.

The number of apps available on the App Store has grown since January. There are now more than 850,000 iOS apps available for download on the App Store, not 750 million as stated above.

With so many iOS-powered devices out there, it won’t take long to reach the 50 billion downloads milestone. Just this past quarter alone (Q2 that ended on March 30th, 2013), Apple sold 37.4 million iPhones and 19.5 million iPads.
