Microsoft’s Windows 7 RC is not the only release candidate to be made available this week, as Gloria can testify. Gloria is the codename of Linux Mint 7, which has just now reached a new milestone in its development process with the release of Linux Mint 7 RC1 (Release Candidate 1).

Lead Developer of Linux Mint, Clem Lefebvre comments: “The 7th release of Linux Mint comes with numerous bug fixes and a lot of improvements. In particular the menu system, the application manager and the upload manager now provide new features such as “Suggestions”, “Featured applications”, “SCP and SFTP support”. The underlying base of the operating system was also strengthened with a new adjustment mechanism which makes Linux Mint more robust and less vulnerable to Ubuntu package upgrades, and the introduction of virtual and meta packages which simplify upgrade paths and the installation of multiple desktop environments.”

The system requirements for installing and running Linux Mint 7 RC1 are quite low. You will need a minimum of 512MD of RAM to install the operating system (you could do it with just 256MB, but the installation process might hang and even fail). Once the installation process is complete, you will only need 256MB of RAM to run it. You will also need to clear up 2.5GB of disk space because the installation process works with 2.5GB of data that is compressed on a 700MB CD.

As a little recap, this week we saw an OS release from Microsoft (Windows 7 Release Candidate), an OS release from Linux (Linux Mint 7 RC1), and nothing from the Apple camp (yet). I say yet because rumor on the web (reportedly based on insider information) has it that Apple will release Mac OS X 10.5.7 by Friday. If the rumor turns out to be true, this has been one interesting week indeed.
