Yesterday the development team behind the popular multiprotocol instant messaging app Digsby announced that it has been acquired by Tagged, a social networking site founded in 2004 and based in San Francisco. Sunny San Francisco is where the Digsby team will move to later this month; it will pack its things and move from Rochester to Tagged’s HQ in San Francisco.

“We are excited to confirm that Tagged has acquired the talent and assets of Digsby, the Rochester based start-up best known for its innovative social networking and multi-protocol IM client,” said Tagged.

The Digsby team said that as part of the Tagged team it will continue its mission of making online communication easy and efficient and that it is excited about the fact that the innovations offered to Digsby users will be offered to the 100 million people all over the world who use Tagged.

The fact that the Digsby team has been acquired by Tagged does not mean the Digsby client will be discontinued. So if you were worried your favorite multiprotocol instant messaging app will go the way of the dodo, you need not be. The Digsby team said it will continue to support Digsby as a standalone product and that it’s still talking to Tagged about long-term plans for Digsby. The team added that very strong safeguards have been put in place to ensure your account information will be kept safe and secure.

“For now, Digsby will continue to function as usual and will be supported as a standalone product,” confirmed Tagged.

If anything, the acquisition makes for a better user experience. All the offers that came bundled with Digsby, offers you saw during the installation process are being removed. “We hope this will make Digsby a better experience for you and your friends,” said the Digsby team.
