Offered free of charge by Dicitionary.com, the site that allows you to look up accurate and extensive definitions and word meanings, the Dictionary.com iPhone app will come in handy when you are on the go and you need to look up definitions and synonyms to words you are not quite sure what they mean. The fact that the Dictionary.com app is out there isn’t exactly news. It’s been around since 2009 – at least that’s when we first reported on it.

The news is that the app will be updated and the update will bring with it some very interesting functionality, mainly voice-to-text definitions.

Imagine this situation if you will. Bob from accounting said something about prosopography. You had no idea what that word meant, but you played along, not wanting to seem unknowledgeable. Now that Bob went back to his office, you take out your iPhone, launch the Dictionary.com app and look up the word – but you realize that not only do you not know what the word means, you don’t know how to spell it either.

This is where the voice-to-text functionality comes in. Instead of typing in the word, and getting it wrong, you can just speak it out. The app will recognize it and provide you with a definition.

“How many times have you heard a word in conversation, during a lecture, or on TV that you had no idea how to spell, and therefore couldn't look up?” said Dictionary.com President Shravan Goli. “Now just speak the word, and the definition appears on your Dictionary.com app.”

That’s not all the update will bring to the table; it will also bring with it a list of favorites (that allows you to revisit previously searched definitions), a feature that allows you to click a word and get a definition, customizable backgrounds, and the option to share info on social networks.

A quick check on the App Store shows the app has not been updated yet. Should be updated soon though. Leave a message in the comments section if you have some relevant info to share.
