Dev Team Cracks iPhone 3G Processor

We are glad to report that the iPhone Dev Team has actually broken into the baseband processor of the very popular iPhone 3G. Why would you be even a little bothered about this? Well, an unlocked version of the iPhone means that you can use it regardless of your mobile carrier (as long as it is 3G compatible, of course). There is still some way to go before we can see an unlocked version of the iPhone, but it can't take much longer now, so we are eagerly awaiting it.

The iPhone Dev Team certainly aren't new at this. Remember the first generation of iPhones? They were the ones to crack it back in the day and offer an unlock key. By cracking the iPhone 3G's baseband processor the Dev Team can run various applications on it, bringing them very close to an unlock (you could even say imminently close).

There is one little catch though. The Dev Team is working on unlocking the baseband of iPhones running OS 2.0, the pre-loaded operating system featured on the hand held device. Regarding the other operating systems, OS 2.0.1, 2.0.2 and 2.1 which have been released since OS 2.0, the Dev Team say further hacking might be in order until the iPhone can be unlocked. With the upcoming release of OS 2.2 it is believed that Apple will once again lock the iPhone.

Until a software unlock of the iPhone 3G is a available we will have to stick to the classic hardware SIM unlock. This method requires you to insert a hardware device into the handset in very much the same manner you would insert a SIM card. On the upside, it will let you use your iPhone 3G on any network; on the downside, unless you get a good hardware product you will have issues with signal strength, reception quality, various issues with 3G, and so on.
