Dev Team: Beware of Fake Yellowsn0w

Now that Apple has showcased the iPhone OS 3.0 at the 2009 World Wide Developers Convention (WWDC) at the Moscone Center in San Francisco and has even issued an official release date for the device’s operating system, many of you are feeling the excitement and have already started to look for a simple software unlock for the device, such as the iPhone Dev Team’s Yellowsn0w. The thing is that people with malicious intent are attempting to exploit some users’ gullibility with a fake firmware 2.2.1 Yellowsn0w exploit.

The Dev Team explains: “Unfortunately, there are predators out there that are counting on your over-exuberance. Maybe we should call it yell0w fever. One very recent example is a certain yellowsn0w221 page on wordpress.com. Do not download anything from that page if you’re on a PC, else you’ll be infected with a virus. The page talks and talks about a supposed Firmware 2.2.1 yellowsn0w exploit, but it’s all a ruse to get you to download and infect your PC.”

The site in question is yellowsn0w221.wordpress.com, and the software it was promoting was entitled Yellowsn0w-iPhone-Unlock-3G-2-2-1-final.exe. The site, which is now down, impersonated the Dev Team and attempted to get you to download software that infected your machine with malware that redirected you to the aforementioned WordPress site whenever you would try to visit a number of iPhone related sites.

“Please be on the lookout for any pages that mention “dev team” news that you don’t actually see on this blog first,” added the Dev Team. “ We are very good at not leaking sensitive info (since that really wrecks this whole “cat&mouse” thing). So no blog or forum or youtube page would have any “insider” dev team knowledge that you won’t see announced here first.”

In related news, you should also refrain from updating to iTunes 8.2 as it breaks QuickPwn and PwnageTool (details here).
