Desktop Firefox Add-on: Manage Your Bookmarks Like You Do Desktop Items

Desktop is an add-on for the Mozilla developed Firefox 3.0 browser that will allow you to customize the start page so that you will have speedier access to some of your favorite web pages. The official description of this add-on goes like this: “displays thumbnails on new browser tab with full control on their layout”; but a simpler way of putting it would be to say that Desktop is similar to Opera’s Speed Dial.

The whole thing goes something like this: you get the add-on, which comes free of charge obviously, and you set up thumbnail shortcuts for your favorite pages on the web; every time you open a new tab in Firefox, these thumbnail shortcuts are right there for you to click on. The fun part is that you can drag, drop and resize the thumbnails according to your tastes and needs – which is reminiscent of how one can organize items on the Windows desktop, and presumably the reason why its developers decided to call this Firefox add-on “Desktop”.

Here is a list of features you can expect to get with the Desktop Firefox add-on:
- add thumbnail to new tabs;
- align thumbnails by dragging and dropping them;
- create subfolders;
- synchronize the resulting layout across platforms by using Xmarks or Weave.

The catch is that Desktop is an experimental Firefox add-on, which means that it did not undergo Mozilla’s public review process. “Many of these add-ons may be in prototype form. Since they are untested by our editorial team, they may be alpha, beta or pre-production in quality, performance and features. Caution should be used when installing experimental add-ons, as they have not been tested by an editor and may harm your computer configuration,” explains Mozilla.

If you would like to get Desktop, a download location is available here.
