Assuming of course that you moved past XP and towards Vista in the hopes that Microsoft will give you a free Windows 7 upgrade, here are a couple of software programs that will help you tweak and customize how your Windows Vista operating system looks and feels. WindowBlinds is mainly meant to affect your OS visually; WinBubble combines the visual with functionality tweaks, but I am going to focus on the visual. Additionally you might want to continue your Windows Vista tweaking and customization with the updated Ultimate Windows Tweaker 1.1, a program that puts more than 150 tweaks at your fingertips.

Starting with the order in the title, here are the bits and pieces you should be made aware of in regard to WinBubble. It comes free of charge, it is portable (no installation), it is somewhat similar to Ultimate Windows Tweaker, but the area in which it shines is system icons and context menu customization. There are several customization focal points, including “Security”, “IE”, “General” and “Specific”, but the ones you should click first are “Icons” and “Miscellaneous”. These will allow you to modify system icons and create your own context menu entries.

WindowBlinds works with Windows XP as well as Vista and allows the user to change the manner in which the OS looks by means if “visual styles” (which is just another way of saying “skins”).

“A WindowBlinds skin can make Windows look like an alternative operating system, like their favorite sports or car brand, or something completely new. Because WindowBlinds uses the latest hardware acceleration features of modern video cards, WindowBlinds won't slow down your computer and uses very little memory,” says Stardock, the developer behind this software program.

The downside is that WindowBlinds is not freeware and the trial version provides a limited number of skins.
