I love it when out of nowhere, a big name developer releases a new game and offers it for free so that everyone can enjoy it. Don’t you?

Because that's precisely what happened with Mojang, the developer that’s best known for creating the immensely popular Minecraft game (and for getting acquired by Microsoft for the staggering amount of $2.5 billion).

Mojang recently released a new game called Crown and Council, describing it as "a fast-paced strategy game about conquering land and obliterating rival monarchs."

"Click adjacent land tiles to subdue them with your army, earning gold to fund further expeditions, defensive forts, naval attacks, universities and more. Muscle your opposition off the map! There can be only one ruler in these lands!" says Mojang’s Marsh Davies.

Crown and Council is available for free on Steam, where it is described as "a casual strategy game of geopolitical drama. Conquer, expand, build and develop your kingdom, until all your foes are crushed!"

You can grab the game from Steam and enjoy it for free, even if you have a less powerful PC. After all, the system requirements are quite low.

Crown and Council – Minimum requirements
  • OS – Windows 7, 8, 8.1, 10.
  • Processor – 1.5GHz or faster.
  • Memory – 1GB of RAM.
  • Graphics – integrated graphics card.
  • Storage – 300 MB available space.

Since this is Mojang we’re talking about, I’m sure it will come as no surprise when I tell you that Crown and Council uses procedural generation. It relies on procedural generation for its 75 included maps, with the map generator being built into the game so you can create your own maps on the fly. And according to Marsh Davies, it relies on procedural generation for the insults you get from your regal rivals.

Crown and Council can prove to be an interesting choice, especially if you’re looking for a way to kill some time without spending a dime. After all, the game is completely free!

Valve’s Steam is best known for being a platform distribution for video games, such as the new Crown and Council strategy game from Mojang. Soon, it will also be known as a platform distribution for movies.

You see, Valve just struck an agreement with Lionsgate and as part of this agreement, Lionsgate becomes one of the first major studios to license films to Valve's popular Steam digital distribution platform. Or to put it in layman’s terms, Lionsgate can distribute its movies through Steam.

The partnership launches with over 100 Lionsgate feature films, including movies from the blockbuster Hunger Games, Twilight, Saw and Divergent franchises. All of the films will be available as rentals and more titles will be added as the partnership continues to expand worldwide.

"We're delighted to partner with Steam, a leader in the digital entertainment and gaming space, as part of our commitment to remain at the cutting edge of innovation in delivering content to online audiences around the world," said Lionsgate President of Worldwide Television & Digital Distribution Jim Packer. "With over 125 million users, Steam represents a unique, exciting and disruptive opportunity to expand our global distribution business."

"Lionsgate has emerged as a major creative force with a deep pipeline of blockbuster franchises and commercially exciting, star-driven event films, making them important content suppliers for our platform," said Valve head of marketing Doug Lombardi. "Their films are engaging audiences and fostering rich communities around the world, reflecting the kind of high-quality entertainment that we expect to drive the continued expansion of our content offering."
