Cracked and Pirated iWork 2009 Spreading Malware
Two products caught the public’s attention at MacWorld 2009: iPhoto ’09 for receiving the “Best of Show” award, and iWork ’09 for being so rapidly cracked. Now it seems that the cracked versions of iWork ’09 that are being shared online by means of torrent sites come bundled with a Trojan.
Intego, Security Company best known for their VirusBarrier X 5, company whose good name was used to spread malware back in December, issued this warning: “Intego has discovered a new Trojan horse, OSX.Trojan.iServices.A, which is currently circulating in copies of Apple’s iWork 09 found on BitTorrent trackers and other sites containing links to pirated software. The version of iWork 09, Apple’s productivity suite, is complete and functional, but the installer contains an additional package called iWorkServices.pkg.”
When you launch the installation of iWork ’09, you will also trigger the installation of iWorkServices.pkg which will first ask you to provide the administrator password and then will connect to a remote server thus informing the malware spreader that the Trojan is up and running. To ensure that the malware will be triggered every time you fire up your machine, it will be installed as a startup item.
The Trojan may compromise your machine in several ways: it could allow someone with malicious intent to install additional unwanted software, or it could simply steal your confidential info (things like your online banking username and password). According to Intego iWorkServices.pkg has been downloaded more than 20,000 times and even though detection for this malware has been added to VirusBarrier X4 and X5, you are well advised no to download pirated versions of iWork ’09.
“Intego is issuing this alert to warn Mac users not to download iWork 09 installers from sites offering pirated software. The risk of infection is serious, and users may face extremely serious consequences if their Macs are accessible to malicious users. Intego recommends that users never download and install software from untrusted sources or questionable web sites.”
