Google is celebrating Safer Internet Day 2016 by once again offering extra cloud storage space for Google Drive, for free.

Just like last year, all you have to do get it is complete a very, very short security checkup. Once you’re done, Google will reward you with an extra 2GB of storage space for Google Drive.

Google says that taking its Safer Internet Day 2016 Security Check will take less than 2 minutes. I think it will take less than that, since it is a very simple 3 step process.

Step 1 – Sign into your account.

Visit the Security Checkup webpage and sign into your Google account.

Step 2 – Review important settings

If someone manages to break into your account, you might get locked out. To make sure that doesn’t happen, you must provide some recovery information: recovery phone, recovery email, security question.

And speaking about having your account broken into, the next thing you must do is check your connected devices. Take a look at the devices that are connected to your Google Account and see if everything looks good or not.

And last but not least, you must check your account permissions. Go over a list of apps, websites, and devices that are connected to your Google Account.

In some cases, instead of asking you to check your account permissions, Google will ask you to disable access for less secure apps.

Step 3. Enjoy your free 2GB

Once you’re done reviewing all the settings, Google will reward you with 2GB of free storage space for Google Drive.

And yes, the 2GB from the 2016 Security Checkup will be added on top of the 2GB you got for performing the 2015 Security Checkup.

This isn’t a 1-day deal, but it is a limited time offer

Safer Internet Day 2015 was on February 10 and Google let you take the security checkup until February 17. Safer Internet Day 2016 is on February 9 and Google is letting you take the security checkup until February 11.

Recap

Today, February 10, 2016 is Safer Internet Day. Held annually on the second day of the second week of February, it promotes safer and more responsible use of online technology and mobile phones, especially among children and young people across the world.

Take Google’s 2016 Security Checkup and you will earn 2GB of free storage space for Google Drive. The 2GB will pile on top of your existing storage space, including the 2GB you got from the 2015 Security Checkup.

You have until February 11 to complete the checkup.

Tip – although you should confirm your phone number for security reasons, you don't have to do that if you don't want to. You can complete the Security Checkup even if you don't confirm your phone number.
